Summary: | This study aims to determine the use of code-switching by teachers in bilingual class learning activities. Specifically, this study examines manifestation, function, and factors behind the use of code-switching. This research uses descriptive method. Data in this research is verbal data, which is recording of teacher's speech in learning activity which is transcribed then made into corpus data. The verbal data mentioned are lingual units of words, phrases, clauses, and code-switching contained sentences. Data collection techniques used in this study is a involve conversation observation technique. Data collection techniques are observation, interview, and documentation analysis. In testing the validity of the data, researchers used triangulation techniques.The result of the research shows that there are two forms of code-switching in the form of the transfer of language; those are the code-switching from Indonesian to English and the code-switching from English to Indonesian. The function of teacher's use of code-switching in learning activities are explaining something, repeating the meaning of speech, commanding, praising, asking for questions, attracting attention, and translating. The factors causing the use of code-switching in classroom learning activities found in this study are linguistic factor, classroom situation factor, objective factor to be achieved by speakers, and emotional factors of the speaker. |
