description This article aims to provide a brief overview of the evolution of the level of primary education in Spain as regulated by the great educational laws of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Specifically, four education laws formulated in the last century and a half are considered (Moyano Law of 1857, Primary Education Law of 1945, General Education Law of 1970 and L.O.G.S.E. of 1990). In the analysis carried out, it is attended, on the one hand, to some aspects of organizational character (duration, obligation, gratuitousness and internal structure of the level) and, on the other hand, to the contents taught in the primary study programs.
