description | The National Institute of Demographic Studies (INED) stands out in the French academic landscape because of the attention it pays to making its research data accessible to the wider scientific community. Since the 1980s, the “surveys unit” assists researchers in archiving their surveys. In this interview for the Tracés journal, Gwennaëlle Brilhault, head of the surveys unit, Amandine Morisset, in charge of documenting surveys, Cris Beauchemin and Patrick Simon, INED researchers, highlight the tedious work that giving access to research data implies and the complexity of the questions it raises. Throughout the discussion, they explore the concrete challenges it brings up, both cost-wise and time-wise; the lack of recognition it often entails; the issues of intellectual property it creates and the fuzziness that surrounds the notion of “sensitive data”. By enumerating the various operations necessary to opening up and documenting survey data, the interview demonstrates that “data” can by no means be “raw” and must be equipped with a wealth of information to be reusable. |
