Description
Summary:This paper discusses the results of an extensive research project financed by Ghent University which focusses on the multidisciplinary investigation of prehistoric sites and landscapes in the Wase Scheldepolders situated in NW Belgium (province of East Flanders). In this study-area, continuously threatened by the expansion of the Antwerp harbour, the Pleistocene surface and so the prehistoric sites are well-preserved thanks to a covering with peat and (peri-)marine clayey sediments. Six prehistoric sites could be investigated in the context of salvage-excavations in and along two harbour docks, the ‘Verrebroekdok’ and the ‘Deurganckdok’. The sites span a very long time-range, starting from the Final Palaeolithic (Federmesser culture), over the Mesolithic until the start of the Neolithic (Michelsberg culture), i.e. from ca. 12,000 until ca. 4000 cal. BC. Multidisciplinary analyses yielded important insights in the economy and ecology of these prehistoric locations and their immediate surroundings.
