description The realization of the Papanicolaou Test is recognized worldwide as a positive and effective strategy for early detection of cervical cancer in the female population and has truly changed the incidence and mortality rates for this cancer. The study aimed to investigate the causes that lead some women not performing and the feelings involved during the execution of this test. This is a descriptive and exploratory research. The research underwent evaluation and approval of the Research Ethics Committee under opinion number 1092488/2015 and from the approval began collecting data that happened to interview recorded and used a semi-structured form with the participation of ten women in the Family Health Strategy in the period from January to February 2016. the women had an age range 19-48 years; two said they did not remember the last time they were examined, 70% reported that the preventive should be held annually. 60% said that the Papanicolaou exam is done to prevent diseases, 10% reported that it is to detect lesions in the cervix, 10% believed that it is to detect infections and 20% asserted that it is for cancer diagnosis purposes. The feeling most cited by women was a shame, and this is the main barrier for not performing the Pap smear. Nursing plays an important role in preventing and combating cervical cancer through educational activities aimed at clarifying the techniques used and their methods for early diagnosis and treatment.
