description | Dyes have been widely used for generations to add color to fabrics and food.Due to adverse reactions attributed to some synthetic dyes, consumers nowseek products containing substances of natural origin. In this research, the dyefrom the seeds of “achiote” (Bixa orellana), consumed and commercialized inEcuador, was extracted and characterized. Dye extraction was performed usingthree solvents: acetone, chloroform and 2% aqueous potassium hydroxide, inorder to find out which one is efficient extraction solvent. Visible and infraredspectra obtained from the different solvents were compared with the spectraobtained from literature. The results obtained underwent a two-way analysis ofvariance to determine if there is a statistical significance between the four sam-ples and the three solvents used. Results show that the best solvent for dye ex-traction is 2 % potassium hydroxide with an average extraction percentage of 9,18 %. In the visible spectra obtained, at 471 and 504 nanometers, two rep-resentative peaks were observed. In the infrared spectra analysis, all the func-tional groups for bixin were found. Therefore, it can be concluded that theextracted dye contains this molecule. |
