description In the last few years, physical, social and humanistic sciences are placing an ever increasing importance in the analysis of emotions. Several factors endorse this consideration. We could point out, among others, the diversity of the disciplines involved in the study of affective processes (neuroscience, cognitive psychology, social history, cultural geography, literary studies) or the recent opening of research centres concerned with theory and history of emotions in prestigious institutes such as the University of London or the Max Planck Institute in Berlin. Regarding social sciences and humanities, the so-called affective turn (Clough, Seighworth) has made it possible to gain a better understanding of cultural practices and objects that traditionally lacked conceptualisation. However, the literary perspective in the discussion regarding affections still lacks a deep analysis, even though the link between literature and emotions in individuals and communities has always been close and fruitful. The goal of this proposal is to defend a new focus on affections by literary studies in general and literary theory in particular, taking French author Roland Barthes' discourse as a guide and stimulus.
