Description
Summary:This paper describes the main techniques used internationally to inspect polymeric insulators. One important experience on the inspection of polymeric insulators in Mexico is shown in detail. A housing degradation was not detected by binoculars, but it was found by other inspection techniques. From the damage found, the electrolytic degradation process on the rod is described. Alternative solutions to avoid the brittle fracture are also shown. On the other hand, the damage detected in the insulator rod shows the necessity to consider the acid test request as a prototype test to evaluate synthetic insulators. A methodology is also proposed for conducting this test.
