description Introduction: Dental caries continues to be one of the most prevalent human diseases, affecting children and adults alike. Fluoride has played a central role for several decades in caries prevention. Aim: To systematically review the literature on the effect of 5000 ppm fluoridated toothpaste in prevention of dental caries. Materials and Methods: A literature review was performed in PubMed Central and Cochrane Library, Embase, Google Scholar from 1960 up to February 2016 to identify appropriate studies. The primary outcome was to measure reduction in dental caries and caries related factors like dental plaque and salivary variables. Results: Out of the total 69 titles that appeared, 14 articles fulfilled the eligibility criteria and were selected for the review. The use of toothpaste with 5000 ppm fluoride significantly reduces the dental caries prevalence rate, the amount of plaque accumulated, decrease the number of mutans streptococci and lactobacilli and possibly promotes the fluorapatite crystal formation to a higher degree than after the use of traditional fluoride containing toothpaste. conclusion: Use of 5000 ppm fluoride toothpaste significantly improves the remineralisation, salivary concentration of fluoride, fluoride retention in plaque, modifies caries risk, reduces root caries susceptibility and prevent mineral loss.
