Description
Summary:The present article aims to investigate the ins and outs of “semasiology” (Semasiologie), the psycho-affective model of language expounded by Heinrich Gomperz (1873-1942) in the second volume of his Weltanschauungslehre (1908). For Gomperz, affective states, as essential components of the statement (Aussage), underpin conceptual meaning (“material logical feelings”), grammatical meaning (“formal logical feelings”), and linguistic sign (“feeling of mediacy”). Here I intend to revisit a theory that has remained unparalleled in the history of language sciences, by putting it into its historical context and showing how it is likely to echo current linguistic and philosophical research.
