description The purpose of this paper is to analyze the performance of the Brazilian left-wing parties in a recent democratic context, especially during the first term of president Fernando Henrique Cardoso. To take it into effect, the instance of action of these parties in the Congress was used, especially its representatives’ law production from 1995 to 1999, during the 50ª legislative period. The interest about this subject has two justifiable reasons: a) the Brazilian redemocratization, when the legislative branch resumed and/or acquired important functions, at the same time that kept the majority of the executive legislative branch, acquired during the authoritarian governments and; b) the political situation, that means, the left-wing parties facing a neoliberal oriented government. Starting from the analysis of the empirical material, the understanding of many questions will be searched as: were the proposals shown by the left-wing parties leading to a specific subject or went around through various other different subjects? Who were their congressmen legislating to and in the name of whom? Through this way, this paper has the aim of deeping the study about the performance of the left-wing in the Congress sphere, and the shocks faced by these parties in a definite historic moment.
