description | Brazil's international identity has been, for a long time, associated with the notion of underdevelopment. Its recent ascension has motivated a foreign policy which aims to state a new international identity for the country as an emerging power, taking on a lead role in several areas. The present study investigated which tensions arise, in the eyes of domestic and foreign observers, as the new identity tries to replace the previous one, considering the constructivist premise that identity formation is an intersubjective process, and that its outcome depends on interpretation and legitimation by the agents. In order to do so, we analyzed which visions about Brazil's place in the world are summoned by the official discourse of the Brazilian State and by the domestic and international press to interpret a controversial episode of Brazilian diplomacy, which is representative of this current identity enterprise: the Nuclear Deal signed with Iran in May 2010. To assess which world views are evoked, the official State discourse was contrasted with that of two foreign and two Brazilian publications in the same time period. The methodology for this analysis was French Discourse Analysis. |
