Comparison of the karyotypes of the central and southern populations of the northern anchovy Engraufis mordax, girard 1854 (engraulidae, pisces)

description The northern anchovy Engraulis mordax is an important fishery resource. The karyotypes of the central and southern populations of the northern anchovy, as well as their C-banding patterns were studied as potential genetic markers. The karyotype of both populations has 48 acrocentric chromo- somes and agrees with the one reported by Ohno et al. (1968) probably from the central population. The common chromosome number, the entirety of their chromosomes of uni-armed type, the agree- ment in their C-banding pattern and the absence of statistically significant differences between the lengths of the chromosome pairs of both populations, do not provide features that could be considered distinctive of the populations analyzed.
