Description
Summary:The purpose of this study was to investigate student opinions about the teaching of English in high schools located in Gaziantep. This research was conducted at 26 high schools in Gaziantep. The population of the study consisted of the students attending these high schools and the sample of it was composed of 414 students. A questionnaire which was assumed to reflect students` views and consists of 11 items was used as the tool of data collection. The data collected through this questionnaire were analyzed using the SPSS (the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). According to the findings of the study; it was found that about half of the students were dissatisfied with the teaching of English at their schools. A great majority of them were of the opinion that assessment of the teaching of English should be based on grading. Students saw no relationship between the knowledge of English and developing technology. Majority of them stated that they were taught English in a boring manner and that apart from course books and cassette players, no teaching-learning materials and equipment were used. On the whole, it can be concluded that the teaching of English at high schools located in Gaziantep is far from meeting the student expectations and needs
