| description | This article is aimed at analysing the characteristics of the Spanish Army in 1975. For this purpose, it starts from the idea that Franco’s regime turned the armed forces and, more precisely the Army, into its main defensive stronghold. This was achieved by providing the Army with a Western-like military culture, a strongly cohesive system and, above all, an independent, higher status within the administration. It was precisely this position, together with a particular territorial organization, and the ideology of its members, that allowed the military to watch and to act upon any institutional change in the State, thus legally granting Franco’s regime. | En este artículo, se analizan las características del Ejército español en 1975. Para ello, se parte de la idea de que el franquismo convirtió a las Fuerzas Armadas, y más concretamente al Ejército de Tierra, en su principal bastión defensivo; dotándole de una cultura militar homologable con la del mundo occidental, de una fuerte cohesión y sobre todo de una posición autónoma y superior dentro del organigrama administrativo. Era precisamente esta posición, unida a su organización territorial y a la ideología de sus componentes, la que permitía a la institución militar vigilar y mediatizar cualquier cambio institucional del Estado, actuando así como garantes legales del franquismo. |
