description The article considers a number of theoretical issues related to the concept of connotation and status of connotative meaning in linguistics. It is analyzed a variety of interpretations of the connotation in the aspect of its stylistic, pragmatic, cognitive and psycholinguistic significance. The focus of research is the problem of asymmetry of the connotative meanings of words-equivalents, which still has not found a clear theoretical decision and as a result, practical solutions.
