Shrnutí: | This paper offers a new analysis of the La Tène D2 fortification at Gergovia. The dry-stone piers built against the inner face of the main wall are traditionally identified as buttresses or access ramps, but this interpretation does not fit the architectural evidence. We suggest that they were intended to support the beams and planks of a wooden floor, thus increasing the width of the wall walk. Similar designs have been reported from fortifications in Hispania Citerior and Transalpine Gaul that derive, through Roman intermediaries, from a Hellenistic model. |
