Staphylococcus aureus is a hardy, adaptable, opportunistic pathogenic agent that is able thrive in diverse environments.2–4 It is often present in the natural flora of the human and animal nose and skin, being also recovered from food, food production systems and the environment, causing a range of illnesses from minor skin infections and food poisoning to life-threatening diseases.2,3,5
