description This paper aims to show a wide range of issues taken up in the correspondence of town authorities of Namysłow from the mid 14th century to the early 16th century. The chronicle „Annales Ioannis Frobenii ab anno 1347”, written at the turn of the 15th century, has been used as a historical source (the work covers the period 1347–1509). The author of the chronicle was Johannes Froben, who in the years 1495–1503 and then 1509–1510 was a town scribe and notary in Namysłow. The issues taken up in the correspondence of town authorities of Namysłow may be divided into some subject areas. They are as follows: town privileges, relations between the town and the governors, town and castle pawns, feuds and feud letters, affairs pertaining to town and castle defences, calls to arms and danger warnings, homage demands by Ladislaus the Posthumous and George of Poděbrady, complaints, financial and tax problems. Being an example of official historiography, Froben’s chronicle had to justify the actions taken by the town council. There is no doubt that the chronicler has included archives in his chronicle in order to achieve the goals the authors of this genre of historiography used to set themselves. A large number of historical records demonstrates that „Annales…” are an excellent source of invaluable information on the town correspondence. Furthermore, it is to be stressed that some sources mentioned in the chronicle have been irretrievably lost so that they may be read only due to strenuous work done by the town scribe of Namysłow five centuries ago.
