| Summary: | The idea of this paper is a review of the main theories about the Eastern European pattern of family and fertility - if there is any - historically and in the modern times. Some researchers argued there is an Eastern as well as a Western European system of family, and the differences between the two are remarkable. Other studies showed that the Eastern European countries include various types of family systems, and none one can be considered as predominant. However, during the modern times, the changes in family structure made the region homogeneous and similar to the rest of Europe, making the distinction East — West to be less important, at least in terms of fertility and family pattern. Selected articles published after 1990 are reviewed as well as frequently cited articles published before 1990. |
