This article addresses an old Florentine tradition which goes back to the first half of the 19th century, when Giovan Pietro Vieusseux was the director of his famous Gabinetto Scientifico e Letterario in Florence: every year, on the 20th of August, the book printers used to celebrate their patron saint, St. Bernard, by offering to their customers a gift booklet containing a short prose or poem. As a publisher of Antologia, J.P. Vieusseux received this gift by the printing house Pezzati until the suppression of the periodical (1833). In 1835, the tradition resumed with the Galileana, which printed the Giornale agrario toscano, Guida dell’educatore, and other works published by initiative of J.P. Vieusseux. These gift booklets, known as “St Bernardo’s”, are hard to trace today. Here we examine few “St. Bernardo’s” item, that we have been able to find.
