description This paper describes the barriers to labor organizing on the one hand and to the union activity on the other hand, in the export-oriented apparel industry of Guatemala, the so-called maquilas. It identifies the practical barriers and everyday constraints to the defense of labor rights in those factories. This work is based on an in-depth fieldwork research undertaken between 2006 and 2009 in four maquilas in the outskirt of Guatemala City, where unions managed to emerge in the early 2000s.
