description | How should we think about cultural interaction processes? Analysis of the Arab world is too often reduced to a cyclical analysis of these relations underpinned by a universal form of chauvinism. Indeed, the strength of the ideology of immediacy is its ability to domesticate our points of view. This presupposes that shared trust in the knowing subject is so strong that our reading of the immediate moment is correlated by an equally similar analysis of the event itself and of how it is commented upon (for example using antagonistic terms: “West versus East”, “war of civilizations”). And yet, although our knowledge is reduced to the quality of thought, we have no difficulty saying what we know. But what exactly do we know about the relations of practical interculturality? How may we think about political cultures outside the West without ideological narcissism or scholastic ethnocentrism? To achieve this requires freeing oneself from the prism of cultural areas and asking the question of the experience of the universal again. |
