description In 2001, Jeremy Deller “replayed” with its real protagonists a battle of 1984 between miners and police under Margaret Thatcher. His completion of a cathartic scene is only valid in the first place for its considerable labour in interviewing, collecting data, archives, etc. Thought of as much as a laboratory for anthropological observation, where the figures who featured in it come back to life, as a work site for an historical investigation, the event splits in two the better to reformulate the experience for us. Between reconstitution, counter-documentary, and live cinema Watkins’ narrative strategies – most notably in his film on the Commune of Paris – have prefigured in contemporary art such a work of living history.
