Description
Summary:The question of crimes against women – the focus of international media attention since the end of the twentieth century – has given rise to legal, social and media debate across the Middle East. This article offers an analysis of the current political debate on this subject in Jordan and in the Palestinian territories. We shall see that these developments have provoked polemics – pitting activists in support of women’s rights against conservatives, who are generally hostile on this question. Various initiatives, aided by growing regional solidarity and foreign funding, have yielded real changes – for example, Jordan’s law for the prevention of family violence, passed by the parliament in January, 2008. Nevertheless, discriminatory regulation of sexuality and of crimes against women continues to privilege a vision of inequality with regard to relationships between men and women as couples and within the family.
