description | This article is about the journey of a former policewoman, from the Isle of Man, Amy, who gradually encounters the Anglo-Saxon spiritualist religion, then discovers within herself the gift of mediumship, and eventually becomes a spiritual medium, turning her practice into a profession, albeit a part-time one. The autobiographical account of her life allows us to investigate the figure of the medium as a « specialist in religion » in the Anglo-Saxon spiritualist context. In particular, the description of Amy’s mediumistic practices in her daily life will illustrate the kind of negotiation that takes place between the sacred and secular spheres in contemporary Western societies, through a hybrid religious figure whom I have named the « secular ascetic ». This will lead me to question the very notion of « part time » regarding the meaning I am going to give to those terms. |
