description These in-progress psychological notes are an attempt to frame within the general model of Albert Bandura’s social cognitive theory the possible motivations at play in the practice of extreme sports - i.e. those involving the risk of injury or death in the event of a mistake - which are nowadays becoming increasingly popular and increasingly extreme in terms of performance. In addition to listing the motivations that can induce people to participate in outdoor sports in general, some hypotheses are made to explain what may lead them more specifically to choose such risky activities. An important contribution to understanding the attitude towards death of extreme performers comes from the existential psychology of Irving Yalom, while Karen Horney’s theory of neuroses can shed light on the motivation to do extraordinary things at any cost.
