description The article summarizes the results obtained during the last years at the Department headed by the article author, as well as literature data, on the role of transforming growth factor type beta in the action towards animal and human organisms of extremal agents of different nature – chemical, physical, mechanical, pathobiological. It is demonstrated that those agents can stimulate the mammalian cells to production of that cytokine which acts as growth inhibitor and apoptosis inducer for cells of epithelial origin and for most immunocompetent cells. The mechanisms used by tumor cells to achieve their resistance to the effect of this cytokine, that can help them to escape of its inhibitory action, are described.
