| description | The more important the cities in the Ottoman Empire where the princesses grow, the more important the port cities, which are the commercial centers. The Izmir port studied in this paper has always been remarkable for features, and hinterland it has from the Ottoman period to the present. In order to follow the historical development of the port, three main sources have been taken as basis. The first work referred to in this study is "Kitâb-i Bahriye”, written by Piri Reis in the 16th century. The second source used the book titled “Ottoman Izmir: The Rise of a Cosmopolitan Port 1840–1880” written by Sibel Zandi-Sayek. The last source is the report which was published at the end of the meeting of the Supreme Assembly of Economics held on December 15-19, 1931. In the report that gives information particularly on the status and import-export statistics of Izmir Port, the figures before and after the war were examined in detail in order to give an overall picture of the period. Using these sources as basis in this study, we tried to provide a broad perspective of the historical development and maritime trade of the Port of Izmir over three centuries in chronological order. |
