description | The objective of the article presented here is to carry out an investigation, based on the theoretical framework developed by Carlos Hasenbalg, of the strategies for maintaining racial and social inequalities in Carioca soccer in its early years. For this, we will consider as empirical landmarks the cases of the Bangu Athletic Club and the Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama, clubs of popular character, and the reactions of the consolidated rivals of the city, linked to the socioeconomic elites, to prevent the sports ascension of these clubs. Color and social position appear as criteria of distinction and obstacles to material and symbolic benefits. The tension between amateurism and professionalism, with the rise of Vasco da Gama, would provoke irreversible consequences to the soccer of the city. |
