Description
Summary:Since the beginning of the 21st century, there has been a noticeable exponential increase in studies and theories concerning the relevance of sensory experiences in museum exhibitions. This short article aims to delve into this theme in relation to collections of musical instruments and the adoption of exhibition strategies that enhance both the material and immaterial dimensions, intrinsic characteristics of these objects. In this regard, it is discussed the use of performance as a complementary method for exhibiting musical instruments, as well as the integration of replicas and functional mechanical models as enhancers of multisensory experiences. This discussion is supported by literature review and the analysis of the exhibition practices recently adopted by the Museu Nacional da Música (MNM), in Lisbon. Can performative initiatives – such as concerts – and multisensory experiences be considered forms of exhibition communication for musical instruments? Based on an analysis of the National Museum of Music’s practices, the article concludes by proposing a set of future strategies for the exhibition and communication of the musical instruments in the MNM's collection, which aim to enrich the visitors’ experience.
