description Obesity is now considered as a global epidemic that threatens individuals’ health as well as the sustainability of public health systems. It is characterized by excessive accumulation of the body fat resulted from energy intake exceeding energy expenditure. Restriction of food intake is the leading method to counteract obesity. Nevertheless, research over the last decades has focused on the study of medicinal plants and their effect on obesity and other related metabolic disorders, such as dylipidemia, hypertension, insulin resistance, diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Among these, Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer is a herbal remedy of East Asia that has been traditionally used to optimize body function and promote health. Ginseng roots and extracts, as well as its bioactive components, gingenosides, have been extensively studied for the potential biological activities. Studies on animals, cell cultures and humans highlight the beneficial effects of the Korean red ginseng (KRG) on weight loss, glucose and fatty acid metabolism, inflammation and oxidative stress. In this review, we aimed to update and summarize the research evidence from human clinical trials of the last decade regarding the effects of KRG on weight loss and cardiometabolic risk factors.
