description In an axle journal bearing of railway vehicles, it is required to reduce the fretting wear caused by the very slight relative slip between the contact surface of the inner ring and the backing ring. Up to now, we have found that an uneven contact pressure distribution between the inner ring and the backing ring affects the fretting wear. In this work, we have proposed the backing ring which is provided with grooves in the circumferential direction on its oil seal sliding surface in order to obtain the even contact pressure distributions in the radial direction between the inner ring and the backing ring of the axle journal bearing. To confirm the effect of providing backing ring with grooves, we have investigated the contact pressure distributions between the inner ring and the backing ring, and conducted a rotational test using the full-scale railway axle journal bearing. It has been found out that the maximum contact pressure is reduced and the contact pressure distribution in the radial direction becomes even by grooving the oil seal sliding surface of the backing ring in the circumferential direction, and further that the fretting wear of the backing ring with grooves becomes smaller than that of the existing backing ring without grooves. Therefore, there is a possibility that the fretting wear is decreased by bringing the radial contact pressure distribution close to being even.
