description | The current historical scenario sees coexisting a homogenisation trend typical of globalisation and strong fragmentation tendencies that give life to a heterogeneous reality. In both the cases contemporary world shows a widespread return and diffusion of collective identities and the politics of identity. In this context appears the relevance of one basic political question: can Nation-State still be considered as a prominent identification model? The author discusses first the centrality of the identity topic and its developments in the sociological and political theory. Second, a concept of collective identity is elaborated starting from the idea that its building process is 1)structured by the logics of power and “manipulation”, 2) linked to the notions of intra-group relative affinity and inter-group relative extraneousness. In the light of a such a kind of conception, identity moves toward its political dimension. Third, by means of this theoretical frame the essay focuses on the model of Nation-States identity shaping process emphasizing the typical instruments used in the attempts to standardize their own populations (education and political socialisation). Fourth, in front of the question of multiple identities and its challenges to the Nation-State identitarian model the author underlines the Nation-State political capability to overcome these challenges by translating identity into allegiance. Finally, the essay supports the thesis that Nation-State keeps maintaining its supremacy as a political and identitarian model in a global context that sees several systems (supranational or subnational) confronting it for the control of political unification tools. |
