Summary: | Mechanical properties and micro-structural features of welded metal and heataffected zone (HAZ) of three welding processes used to rebuild worn shafts in sugar cane mills were analyzed. For two welding processes the following characteristics were observed in the HAZ: presence of ferrite in the grain boundary, higher grain growth and Widmanstaetten structure, features that reduce steel toughness. A weld ranking was established from mechanical properties obtained by both tension and Charpy impact tests.
