Summary:The scope of rules on scientific ethics, responsible research practice, etc. has grown steadily over recent decades. These are mostly about what researchers should not and what they should do. In this article, I will look at the principles from a different perspective: Freedom of research is part of good scientific practice. Violating research freedom is detrimental to research. First, I outline very briefly what is meant by professions. Next follows an account of what is generally understood by research freedom. The thesis is that responsible research practice holds a tension between restrictions and freedom.
