description The political goal of Catholic social teaching can be termed just peace. True justice is incompatible with violence; while true peace is incompatible with injustice. Justice and peace are interdependent. In the post-Vatican II Catholic ethics of war and peace, strong emphasis has been given to nonviolent means of correcting injustice, while the validity of armed force has become increasingly marginal, especially in papal teaching. In the refrain of Paul VI, “No more war, war never again!” Although the popes leave the door open to self-defense and humanitarian intervention, they insist that nonviolent peacebuilding is more consistent with the gospel, and more effective at replacing injustice with just and sustainable peace. According to Pope Francis, “nonviolence is a style of politics for peace.”
