Summary:In Europe, the profession of engineering emerged as the result of an internal process for the modernization of society that accompanied economic development and technological advances. In the Maghreb, the establishment of a cadre of professional engineers is the result of development projects implemented by these countries following independence. This article traces the emergence and transformation of the engineering profession through three periods of the history of Algeria : the colonial era, the period following independence and the crisis.
