description | Abstract The surgical pathology grossing laboratory is a rich resource for teaching medical student about the gross appearance of many pathologic processes. Dissection of freshly removed surgical specimens can reveal gross pathologic changes in exquisite and emphatic detail. Unfortunately, this experience is limited to the few third- and fourth-year students who do a surgical pathology clerkship. The majority of medical students see excellent surgical pathology teaching cases such as these only in the form of less instructive photographs or formalin fixed archived specimens. I have been recording the dissection of especially vivid and instructive surgical pathology specimens using a high-definition video camera. When the raw footage is carefully edited and combined with appropriate supporting clinical, radiographic, laboratory, and histopathologic information, a very engaging and instructive video presentation can be created. With a very short time investment (3–5 minutes), medical students can learn a great deal about a specific pathologic process and have their interest stimulated for additional study of the topic. This resource is an MP4 video presentation of the gross pathology of a severely arthritic hip joint. Although the video is primarily a pathology resource, it does include a brief description of clinical and radiographic features and therapeutic implications in order to provide medical students with a more comprehensive orientation to the disease process. The video can be viewed on desktop, laptop, or portable media player (e.g., iPhone 4/iTouch 4). |
