Summary: | Corrosion of buried pipes is a phenomenon that depends more on the corrosivity of the ground than on the nature of the metal. The evaluation of the corrosivity of the ground is a complex activity because there are many variables influencing the process. In this work a multivariate analysis of the main factors taking part in corrosion of buried structures was carried out. This analysis allows a factorial classification and permits the transformations of a set of correlated variables into a smaller set of not correlated variables. This study gives a better understanding of data of the experimental units and determines the variables of major influence over the variable response. With this information a smaller number of variables could to be measured. This paper describes the experimental techniques used and the statistics analysis realized of the 6 variables measured in the experimental units. A new set of 3 variables is obtained, which allows a classification of the soils according to corrosivity with a confidence of 90% and an error of 20%.
