description Insofar as the percussive and dance genre, characteristic of the Afro-descendent population, the candombe, in its diferent variations, is part of what Paul Gilroy has defined as Atlántico Negro. The candombe of Afro-Uruguayan style in particular has shown in the last decades an unprecedented development in Argentina. Such process owes its origin to the flow of cultural goods, symbols, knowledge and people over existing national borders between Argentina and Uruguay, in the frame of the recent military regimes and finally converging in the democracy of the above mentioned countries. Having as the main purpose to analyze the relationship that is present in our region between music, politics and ethnicity, we will reveal the incidence of authoritarianism towards the relocation of this genre in the light of our commitment to history of music as continuities and ruptures between democracy and dictatorship are made explicit. The specific analysis of the performance that nowadays groups this immigration, deals with the different articulations of meaning with wich the actors relate the past to the present. In this sense the distinction between memory and history is also focused on as well as the current role of the Argentinian State in the extent that the narration of the actors bring these institutional devices into question.
