description Loss of biodiversity is a matter of the highest concern, and here cities can play an important role in hosting rare and endangered species and habitats. One of the most important objectives is to maintain urban green infrastructure and preserve ecosystem services. This can be achieved by planting native trees and shrubs and creating hedges and flowering meadows to replace “sterile” lawns, water features, wetlands and ponds. This also reduces the need for lawn mowing in urban green spaces and excess use of herbicides. These and similar “nature friendly maintenance” approaches promote not only biodiversity but also benefits to human health.
