description | In the first half of the 17th century, the Baltic grain export route lost its importance due to political instability in the region, and the grain boom declined. However, the need for Ukrainian grain remained in Western Europe, and its producers were interested in export – the main source of capital inflows. And the Black Sea export route, well-known since ancient times, was blocked for several centuries by Turkey, which controlled the entire Black Sea. New opportunities appeared at the end of the 18th century, when, after another Russo-Turkish war, ships under the Russian flag received the right to pass through the Bosphorus. In addition, at this time, a new port – Kherson – was founded, and the projects of organizing the export of grain through this port were activated. One of these projects was the so-called Kherson Company, which was managed by the wealthy aristocrat and entrepreneur Count Prot Pototsky. Although the company’s activity in Kherson did not last long, and Pototskyi’s plans were disrupted by the new Russo-Turkish war, he transferred his grain export activities to another recently founded city, Odesa, which soon became the main center of Ukrainian grain exports. |
