Description
Summary:This paper intends to reflect and discuss about party fractionalization as a category of analysis in the studies of electoral processes and intraparty dynamics. The electoral system of Double Simultaneous Vote (DSV) implemented in the province of Santa Fe between 1991-2003 was the result of a normative framework that made possible a series of singular intraparty behaviours linked to the way the candidates arranged and articulated -among themselves- their candidacies. These dynamics influenced the distinctive features adopted by the “electoral arrangements”, particularly those linked to party fractionalization. Faced with this specific configuration presented by Santa Fe´s case, pretending to estimate the influence of DSV on partisan fractionalization requires building new categories and analysis indicators, or adapting those traditionally used. The objective of the next pages is to notice these limitations, to then redefine the variable “party fractionalization” and test it by applying it to the analysis of Santa Fe´s case.
