Summary:This paper describes the development of the Austrian bioeconomy strategy from its first beginnings in 2012 and the prominent role played by Christian Patermann in this context. He was involved in various phases of the discussion and development of the Austrian bioeconomy strategy, both at national and institutional level until the release of the bioeconomy strategy for Austria in the year 2019. Moreover, he continuously supported the development of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) together with its European university network partners to implement bioeconomy in its strategic activities.
