In three 15th c. illuminated manuscripts and in the 15th English romance Richard Coer de Lyon, beheadings in the Holy Land are illustrated by Saladin’s beheading of Renaud de Châtillon, who is seen as both hero and martyr. But with Richard’s barbaric cannibalism, the arch-diabolical image of the Saracen is reversed, and serves the diffusion of an anti-Frankish, English nationalistic propaganda targeted against the French. |
