description This article deals with the reception of the concept of “growth of healthcare spending” in public debate in 20th century France, from the twenties to the late sixties. Far from being a mere object of knowledge, it immediately became embedded in political and social issues that gave it a special significance. Revealed by economic growth and social transformations, increasing healthcare spending from the outset became a major government concern, along with the advent of welfare state policies. It thus appears inseparable from the issue of controlling spending. This article traces the development of this controversial concept through three key moments: the inter-war period, which witnessed its emergence, the aftermath of World War II and the post-war years, when it appeared as a massive, although challenged, reality, and finally the sixties, the heyday of the “thirty glorious years” of the French economy, which witnessed the institutionalization of publicly financed healthcare as an almost sacred fixture of French life, and simultaneously a growing recognition of the need to tame the increase in healthcare expenditures.
