description Introduction and objective Dietary habits are closely related to the specific working hours. The aim of this publication is to characterize nutritional principles of shift workers and influence of nutritional behaviours on their health. Brief description of the state of knowledge Literature was reviewed and the results of empirical research presented. Conclusions from the reports regarding shift work and the specificity of nutrition were discussed. People working on shifts particularly often lead an incorrect lifestyle, including poorly balanced diet. Conclusions 1. Shift work results in incorrect eating habits of transport and health care workers. 2. The main problems of nurses working on shifts are irregular eating and too many meals per day, which cause obesity and its metabolic complications. 3. Common nutritional mistakes of professional drivers are excessive amounts of sugars, trans isomers of fatty acids and animal protein from meat and its products in the diet, which may result in obesity, as well as cardiovascular and digestive system diseases. 4. Due to the specifics of work, skipping meals, eating in a hurry, irregular meals in a large volume, monotonous and eliminating diet are risk factors of many diet-related diseases in shift workers. 5. There is a need for further research to better understand the relationship between non-compliance with nutritional recommendations, and the specifics of shift work. 6. It seems necessary to introduce pro-nutritional health education for people working on shifts in order to minimize the discomfort, and illnesses associated with irregular mode of work.
