description | The European ecological NATURA 2000 network is constituted by "Special Conservation Zones" (SCZ) and "Community Importance Sites" (CIS). The main objective of this European initiative is to limit the erosion of natural habitats and species through the identification of appropriate areas to guarantee the presence, maintenance and restoration of the most threatened european peculiarities. Moreover, the Italian Ministry of Environment (Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Tutela del Territorio) issued the guidelines for compiling the management plans of Natura 2000 sites. These guidelines are based on the measurement of standardized indicators of landscape mosaic complexity and organization, floristic and vegetation assessment, forest assessment, faunistic and hydrobiological features, disturbance, environmental degradations and socio-economic aspects. Aim of this work is to verify the status and the conservation level of the habitats of the CIS "ITA040005 - Monte Cammarata, Contrada Salaci" (Central-weastern Sicily) - through the application of these guidelines. The identification and delimitation of the included habitats have been based on a detailed forest types map (1:10000). All the forest types included in the Natura 2000 site were analysed regarding to the land mosaic, forest and vegetation assessment in order to derive sustainable management indications. |
