Description
Summary:The paper discusses D’Ippolito definition of Nonnus’ Dionysiaca as a set of epyllia, held together by a rather tenous narrative frame. After arguing that the influence of Ovid’s Metamorphoses (a secondary argument in D’Ippolito’s thesis) is yet to be demonstrated and quite improbable in itself, the paper discusses the specific ‘Nonnian’ nature of the epyllia in the poem and their integration within the larger narrative frame; as an example of this, the paper analyses Ares’ deception in Dionysiaca 29. If epyllion can still have a heuristic value to label the episodes of the poem, the analysis needs however to take into account the cultural and social motivations that lead Nonnus to conceive a digressive and centrifugal structure for his ambitious poem.
